Somerset West is situated in the heart of the famous Cape Winelands. The town was developed around the Lourens River and Vergelegen, a historic private wine estate that was owned by Willem Adriaan van der Stel, governer of the Cape Colony from 1699 to 1707. It was named Somerset after an English governor of the Cape Colony during the 1800s, Lord Charles Henry Somerset, with the suffix “West” being added after 1825 to differentiate it from Somerset East in the Eastern Cape.
The present day Somerset West is a popular residential area thanks to its location between the majestic mountains and its close distance from the sea and other major Cape highlights. The area is renowned for its state of the art golf courses, of which the most famous is the Erinvale golf course, designed by the famous South African golfer Gary Player.
Less than half a century ago, the town’s population was no more than 20 000, but it has since expanded greatly to become a highly desirable national and international holiday and retirement destination. Somerset West now has a great infrastructure, the amenities of a premier holiday resort and a large shopping mall, Somerset Mall, with close to 200 shops, boutiques, restaurants and more for your convenience.
World-class medical services are also offered at a first-rate private hospital, the Mediclinic Vergelegen.
Forty minutes’ drive from the bustling Cape Town, the historical Somerset West is located at the foot of the Helderberg, overlooking the majestic False Bay. From here you have easy access to the beaches at Strand and Gordon’s Bay, and Sir Lowry’s Pass, which crosses the Hottentots Holland mountains with an impressive view over False Bay, into the Overberg and the Cape Peninsula, and then onto the abundant Garden Route.
Somerset Villa Guesthouse is ideally located to explore all these destinations. It is situated at the start of the Helderberg Wine Route, which gives easy access to other Cape Wineland and Boland towns such as Stellenbosch, Paarl, Durbanville, Franschhoek, Wellington, Worcester, Ashton and Robertson.
Our oasis of peace and tranquillity is only a 30-minute drive from the Cape Town International Airport and 40 minutes from the Cape Town city centre. For guests who would like to explore the surrounding area, there are several wine routes with internationally acclaimed wine estates and fine restaurants. There are also beaches, golf courses and large shopping malls within a radius of 10 km of the guesthouse.
